While I'm Livin'
It's been 17 years since we've had a new album from Tanya Tucker, so it's a real pleasure to hear her clear throaty vocals deliver these songs with her characteristic raw emotion. Tucker knows how to get into a song and make it her own, and she demonstrates her ability to turn phrases on this set of songs. Every song is a gem, and every song might be describing some aspect of her own life. Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings produced the album, and Jennings played piano almost every »»»
My Turn
It took a long time and a lot of spins and even a bit of research to find out what was missing from this new Tanya Tucker album. The project is obviously a heartfelt one and not just designed to cash in on a continuing trend of resurrecting old songs and giving them a new, glossy paint job. Tucker has recorded a dozen songs for this disc that were favorite of her late father Beau. She certainly wasn't afraid to take on the giants. The disc has Hank Williams' (Lovesick Blues ), Buck »»»
Tanya
The old growl and attitude is still there, perhaps just a bit less threatening or convincing, but there is a softer, more sensitive side that comes through on Tanya Tucker's new disc. This is the first release in five years for Tucker and her first on her new Tuckertime Records label. 'Old Weakness' starts the disc in a manner befitting her chip-on-the-shoulder legacy. But her tone softens almost immediately 'Oh What A Love' and continues through much of the rest of the disc for songs like 'We »»»
Editorial: Walking the talk – When names like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon and the Hag are invoked, you're talking hard core country. These are the touchstones of country , the guys who made country music what it was and still is (or maybe can be). When these folks would sing about being down-and-out and the rough-and-tumble, they knew of what they were singing about. Fast forward a few years to the country singers of today. »»»
Concert Review: Grammy nominations aside, Yola, Kiah are the real deal – Grammy nominations do not make the artist, but Yola and opener Amythyst Kiah underscored time and again on this night that the honors were well deserved. In fact, Yola and Kiah's other group, Our Native Daughters, are nominated in the same category - Best American Roots. Yola has three other nominations as well. The clear winners... »»»
Concert Review: Deer Tick faces the music quite well – Deer Tick would never be accused of being a smooth, well-oiled musical machine. Far from it. In years past, Deer Tick seemed to embody the wild, rough side of music both on and off stage. Lead singer John McCauley professed at one point at the first of two sold-out shows that he had the best job because he could drink on the job.... »»»
