Maine 1968 Passenger issue. (1969 expiration). These plates were issued at the end of 1967. These plates were dated with the embossed '68' and with the tab slots. These also featured a sticker box in the upper right hand corner. The state initailly had planned to use tabs again but was decided that stickers would be used instead. This plate would be used through 1973 with stickers and a few minor tweaks.

Maine 1969 Passenger issue. The state had dropped the '68' as it was no longer needed but these tab slots were will being made. Must have been some mis-communiation between the state and the plate shop as the tab slots were no longer needed either. The tab slots remained on the plates from plates 395-000 through 403-999.

Maine 1970 Passenger issue. From plates number 404-000 and beyond, the tab slots were removed for good and just the sticker guide bar remained. This also marked the begining of the sticker rotation that Maine had imposed. The state had instructed motorists to plate the sticker in the corners rotaing clockwise. See the above plate for an idea.

Maine 1971 Passenger issue. Nothing fancy here. The sticker was placed in the correct corner according to the states sticker location rotation.

Maine 1972 Passenger issue. Again the sticker was placed in the correct corner for this year as well. This plate progress more rapidly as more vehicles began to show up on the roads.

Maine 1973 Passenger issue. A minor base variation occured around the 685-000 series of the plates. The sticker guide bar in the upper corner was removed ironically right where the 1973 sticker would be. This is one of the highest numbers I have seen for a natural 1973 plate so I dont believe they broke into the 800-000 block. Probably did not get much higher than 785-xxx.
